What many people are not aware of is that when creditors send their reports to the Internal Revenue Service (the IRS), they are required to inform the government of any debts in excess of six hundred dollars that they have forgiven on their 1099 Forms. This lets the federal government know that you have been involved in a situation that allowed you to pay less than the total amount of debt that you had racked up.
